My name is Caroline. And I've started a successful solo practice not once, but twice.
The first time, I had no money, no credibility, and no clients. I was a brand new lawyer who knew I wanted something different. I sat down with a spreadsheet, convinced my parents I wasn't out of my mind, and opened my law firm in the fall of 2014.
After one year, me + my book of business were courted by another small firm to help open their Richmond branch. While working there, I learned a lot-- but working at that firm was a very uncomfortable and -- in my opinion-- toxic experience.
In 2017, after 2 years (& after our boss hadn't paid us full salaries in about 6 months) I left that firm.
It was ugly. I cried and stressed and thought about taking several of the employment offers that came across my desk.
But I went back out on my own. I had experience, knowledge, and confidence. If I could build a law practice once, I could do it again.
